buying MREs

Where is a good place to buy a couple of cases of MRE? Prefer online if anybody has a good source. As usual Ebay has some but the shipping people want is ridiculous.

Here's a good website:

http://www.mreinfo.com/

These are a good price...

I just looked here because I bought a case (10) of HDR's for $85.00 delivered from Cheaperthandirt last month. However, it looks like they are currently unavailable. I would reccomend HDR's over MRE's, I ate one when I got them...a lot of food....and not too bad!

Info on HDR's:

I like this place. I can't eat most MREs because of the huge amounts of modified food starch in them, but I like the MRE pound cakes. They make a great storage-food treat/dessert.

I haven't tried MREs in at least 10 years. My complaint about them was the large amount of refined sugar in the meals. Empty calories.

Are they still like that?

I always remember the joke Meals Rejected by Everyone. (or variations like Meals Rejected by starving Ethiopians, etc)

I hope you don't make MREs your primary stored food. Maybe you could stand it, but I think I would go hungry too often for reasonable health if I had to eat MREs every meal.

I was thinking about them for something I could throw in the truck when the shtf. It was part of my ready grab bag, that I have so that I can get out of the city in a hurry when I need to.

Well interestingly, I'm told that MREs etc. are designed to produce minimal bodily waste, so most of the stuff in there is taken up by your body so you're not having to get out of your trench all the time, or leaving little bits of evidence around the place that you've been there.

Backpacks have there place. Mine stays fully loaded. I could live quite comfortably for about 3 weeks with what I've got in mine. What if you have to flee without it? Lets say the house catches on fire and you have time to grab one item on your way out. I once spent a month, over 2500 miles from home with nothing but my pack and $30 in my pocket. No car either. But for food you have to think light weight. Something like freezdried. Check out Warrifles.com. I got free shipping on my last order.

Thanks for even more input. My "backpack" plan is only a part of my master plan. I was just looking into options for food to help fill in the blanks of this particular part of the master plan. I feel that in a SHTF scenario I need to plan on being able to move out of my "safe" area at some point and want to plan for that. One thing that I have to consider is living 12 mi. from a nuclear power plant. Another to consider is that I am out of town 12-15 days a month for my job. Those 2 points are why I also have included a "moving" scenerio in my big plan.:coolbeer:

For what you want them for, MREs sound like a good option if they taste ok to you: easy to heat, need no water added. Weight is not a big deal in the car.

Re: buying MREs

Actually, I bought three cases of MRE's from mredepot.com. I ate one of the meals which was packed in 4/2006 and it was actually pretty good. TN Andy posted their link in another post, but I live in the swamps down here in Tejas so I can't keep my temps low. But since this package came from california after 1 year it still tasted pretty good. Keep in mind the caloric values were like 75% saturated fat, 65% fat what have you. GREAT for those starving or running through barbed wire dodging bullets. But wouldn't be too good for long term eatery. I just hope they keep for more than 2~3 years down here in the heat.

Good stuff... SHTF ain't gonna be pretty for sure.

As to the MREs ever since katrina they've been sky high in prices.

FWIW I've recently eaten some mres that are 1998 production.. stored in my closet since I got them. They taste just as mre-ish as the day I got them.
